High Adventure - Backpacking 2013 Minimize

Hi all,

I am putting together a 7-11 day backpacking trip for the summer of 2013. Herb Wilson and Ken Kinnard have also (tentatively) thrown their hats into the ring. Dates are currently flexible, and the dates for National Jamboree are going to try to be avoided. Attached is a document with more information.

If you are interested or need more info, please shoot me an e-mail (reply to sender) or talk to me at a Troop meeting.

Take care,

Charlie Schoep

Backpacking Trip-Summer 2013

The Troop Committee has OK’d some of us to start building crews for a High Adventure backpacking trip for the summer of 2013. The idea is to stay local and do a mini-Philmont out of either Tahosa or Ben Delatour. We cannot start making reservations until late spring of 2012, but we can start training and preparing now.  The trip will probably cost between $450-$600 per person, depending on what Trek we do (see descriptions below).

What I need from you is a tentative indication that your Scout (or you, since we will need some more adult leaders) would be interested in going. As we start getting commitments, we can start building crews, discussing dates, and planning training activities. It has been my experience with both camping and backpacking that the more prepared the Scouts are, the more they have.

Both camps require that Scouts be at least 13 years old as of Jan. 1, 2013.

Alpine Adventure (Tahosa) is a five night mountaineering adventure in the high country of Colorado, combining the training facilities of Tahosa High Adventure Base with the lakes and vistas of the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area. The Scouts will be members of a 12-person team (backcountry permits only allow groups of 12 to hike together), learning and applying skills to conquer the strenuous challenges of the program in a dynamic mountain environment.

Sub-Alpine Adventure (Elkhorn Adventure Base at Ben Delatour Scout Ranch)
7 day trek includes backpacking, peak ascent and can include rock climbing with ground school, rappelling,
high C.O.P.E. or Cowboy Camp (as time permits) This trek stays on or near the Ranch property for half
of the week and is off Ranch property for the other half of the week (shuttle included). Crews will
backpack 3-12 miles every day. Elevation: 7,000 - 12,000 feet

Elkhorn SuperTrek (Elkhorn Adventure Base at Ben Delatour Scout Ranch)
This is a ten day backpacking adventure includes all the bells and whistles that your crew is looking for.
All program opportunities (listed above) are available with the addition of an overnight horseback trek
and white water rafting experience on one of the premier rafting rivers in the United States. SuperTreks
always begin on Wednesday.

If you want more information on the treks, you can download the Leader’s Guide for the Tahosa trek off the Denver Area Council website and the Elkhorn High Adventure Base off the Long’s Peak Council website.

Philmont 2011 with Troop 337 Minimize

Hello Troop!

The time for action if you would like to Trek Philmont with a Broomfield troop is NOW!

Our troop did not receive any Treks for 2011, but Troop 337 did. They have 10 spots open and are offering them to our troop. In the past we have had Scouts from 337 go with us to Seabase and Philmont, and we have sent Scouts with 337 to Boundary Waters. There is a long tradition of sharing high adventure between our troops.

The trip is June 18th-June 30th, 2011. The cost to BSA is $725, plus expenses traveling to and from the Scout Ranch. a deposit of $100 is required before February 1, 2010. That is just a few week off folks! Scouts need to be 14 years old by June 2011, so we should have a bunch of guys qualified to go.

If you want to go, please reply to me directly at flying-mooses@msn.com .

Thanks
