April Troop Outing - Broomfield Jamboree

Broomfield Jamboree 2010
Co-Sponsored by Troop 767 and Troop 337

Welcome to Broomfield Jamboree 2010.  We are very excited about this event – it will be great fun to gather several local troops and work with new Scouts on rank advancement.  The troops will be sharing teaching responsibilities for rank advancement, campfire program, and a service project at our campsite area.  Following is information that will be helpful as your troop plans for this event.

Dates:  Friday, April 16 to Sunday, April 18

Location:  We will be at Carter Lake (Larimer County Park) located just west of Berthoud, left off Hwy 287 on Larimer CR 56.  Maps and driving directions will be provided.  For more information, go to the website at http://www.co.larimer.co.us/parks/carter.htm

Facilities:  The troops will be staying at Eagle campground.  We will be camping in tents (no cabins) and cooking outside.  Each troop is responsible for its own meals, so plan accordingly when packing gear for the weekend.

Camp Costs:  There is a cost per car to enter the park, and each troop will be responsible for the campsite fee.  Information will be provided to each troop so that money can be collected from Scouts.  Money for food should be built into the total cost for the weekend (troops are responsible for their own food purchases).

Troop gear:  Each troop is responsible for bringing its own camping and cooking gear.

Personal gear:  Remember that April weather can be unpredictable; all Scouts and Scouters should plan for winter weather and/or the possibility of beautiful Spring weather.  Class A uniforms are required – pack your 10 essentials (refer to the Scout Handbook); also remember to bring Scout handbooks as we will be doing a lot of advancement work.  Sunscreen, sunglasses, and caps are a good idea for bright sunny days.  Warm coats, gloves, and hats may be needed for the cooler evenings.

Opportunities to “Shine”:  As part of our special event, several events will be made available for troops to “shine”.  Some of the activities being planned include:

Dutch Oven Dessert – a chance to prepare and share your troop’s favorite dutch oven dessert.  Entries will be judged by a panel of volunteers from each troop.  Go through your recipes, and bring your best!

Campsite/Tent Inspections – what better way to reinforce “A Scout is Clean” than to conduct an inspection?  Be prepared… (another Scout principle at work?)

Campfire Skit/Song – each troop will be asked to prepare something for Saturday night’s campfire.  Please remember that skits and songs should be “Scout appropriate”.  Please limit the length of the skit/song to three minutes.

“Catapult Capers” – an opportunity for the older Scouts in attendance to work in teams.  Which team can build the most original catapult?  Launch a water balloon the farthest?  Have the best design?  All materials will be provided to the teams so that everyone has the same experience.

Geo-caching – another opportunity for the older Scouts to use their orienteering skills.   Which team can complete the course in the fastest time?  Find all of the items?

Event patches:  We will be offering a special patch for this event – cost is $2.00 per person.  Patches will be ordered for all in attendance.

Program Opportunities:

Rank Advancement – All troops will be asked to sponsor a training station.  Older Scouts should be in attendance to help teach Scouting skills to the new Scouts.  Many outdoor requirements will be completed for rank advancement toward Tenderfoot and Second Class.  Training stations will include the following:

Fire Building (Fireman Chit) – Second Class 2d
Stove/Lantern Lighting – Second Class e, f
Knife/Ax Safety/Use (Totin’Chip) – Second Class 2c
Knots – Tenderfoot 4a, b; First Class 8a
First Aid – Tenderfoot 12 a, b; Second Class 6a, b, c
Map/Compass – Second Class 1a; First Class 1, 2
Service Project – Scouts can earn service hours toward rank advancement

Other Requirements Completed – these items may also be covered:
Tenderfoot 1, 2, 3, 6, 8, 9
Second Class 3, 4, 5
First Class 4a, b, c, d, e (must be done in advance)

Service Project – The Carter Lake Rangers have in the past allowed us to complete a service project as part of our weekend.  Details as to the project will be provided once we know the specifics.  Past projects have included spreading gravel at our campsite area, moving rocks along trails, and fire prevention (clearing/cutting dead limbs).  Plan to bring work gloves – if other items are needed, that information will be forwarded to each troop.

Joint Troop Worship Service:  To promote Scout cooperation, we will have a worship service with songs and readings.  Troops are encouraged to help with this event – please let us know if you are interested.

Contact Information:  Information will be provided to each troop via the Yahoo group that has been established for this event.  If you need further information, please feel free to contact one of the members of the planning committee.
